SK Telecom SK Telecom, the foremost telecommunications company in South Korea, is pouring another $100 million into Anthropic, which specializes in artificial intelligence. This follows an initial investment made by SK Telecom Venture Capital earlier this year in May.
Under this collaboration, both companies will work together to create a language model specifically designed for telecom applications. Anthropic's existing AI model, known as Claude, will be fine-tuned to meet the specific demands of telecommunications providers.
Additionally, Anthropic will partner with SK Telecom to modify Claude for industry-specific uses, covering areas like customer service, marketing efforts, and sales tactics, as well as engaging consumer applications. The company believes that businesses will experience enhanced performance by customizing the model for the telecommunications industry compared to using more generalized models.
Currently, the Global Telco AI Alliance is developing the Telco AI Platform, and SK Telecom along with Anthropic will add a multilingual large language model to this platform. This model will accommodate a wide array of languages such as English, German, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Arabic.
"With our strategic investment in Anthropic, a globally recognized AI technology leader, we aim to collaborate closely to foster innovations in AI,\" stated Ryu Young-sang, SK Telecom's CEO. \"By merging our Korean language-focused model with Anthropic’s robust AI capabilities, we anticipate generating synergy and positioning ourselves as leaders in the AI landscape alongside our global telecom partners.\"
In May of this year, Anthropic raised The Series C funding round raised $450 million, with Spark Capital leading the pack. Other notable investors included Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures, and Zoom Ventures, with SK Telecom participating with a reportedly smaller stake. They opted not to disclose the specific amount they invested in Anthropic. The funds raised will enable the AI startup to broaden its array of products and advance research in AI safety. .
On another note, Anthropic is among the rivals of OpenAI, the entity behind the popular AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT. Presently, Claude is recognized as a significant competitor to OpenAI’s extensive language model, GPT-4. It's worth mentioning that Anthropic was established in 2021 by former senior OpenAI members like Daniela Amodei, Jack Clark, and Jared Kaplan. To date, Anthropic has successfully raised over $1.5 billion in funding. Dario Amodei China Telecom and Conflux Network are set to pilot a blockchain-enabled SIM card in Hong Kong.
