In a groundbreaking initiative, Aleph Zero has rolled out the first-ever EVM-compatible ZK-Privacy Layer that can create zero-knowledge proofs at lightning speeds.
Zug, Switzerland, June 20th, 2024, Chainwire
Aleph Zero has revealed remarkable advancements in its ecosystem, introducing a pioneering EVM-compatible ZK-Privacy Layer that can swiftly generate zero-knowledge proofs in under one second on typical consumer devices, along with zkOS—a comprehensive product suite designed for effortless integration of on-chain privacy into a variety of Web3 applications.
The Aleph Zero The Foundation is thrilled to announce the activation of its testnet for the ZK-privacy EVM Layer 2 solution, powered by Arbitrum Orbit on Gelato RaaS. This innovation represents a significant milestone as the first EVM-compatible privacy solution achieving subsecond ZK proof times, dramatically improving user experience by making on-chain privacy nearly instantaneous.
Aleph Zero has also unveiled an ambitious long-term vision centered around zkOS, a privacy system that is chain-agnostic and designed for client-side zero-knowledge applications. zkOS aims to provide Privacy-as-a-Service (PaaS), seamlessly integrating with apps on WASM and EVM-compatible networks. This strategy broadens Aleph Zero’s appeal to a wider audience of EVM users and is a significant step towards a multichain future.
With zkOS, users can engage in private transactions and interact with decentralized applications (dApps) while ensuring their data remains secure. This framework supports high-throughput applications like privacy-focused DeFi platforms, real-world assets (RWAs), AI tools, and enterprise solutions, significantly extending the reach of privacy tech.
Antoni Zolciak, co-founder of Aleph Zero, stated, “Privacy remains a largely unresolved issue; currently, it’s expensive, complicated to implement, and lacks strong economic incentives for widespread use. With the introduction of zkOS and our zk-privacy EVM layer 2, we aim to transform the landscape not just within the Aleph Zero ecosystem, but across the Ethereum framework as well, leveraging Arbitrum Orbit’s technology and our partnership with the idOS network.”
Launched in November 2021, Aleph Zero’s Substrate-based WASM Layer 1 blockchain gives developers subsecond finality, supports 170 validators, and has over 40 teams creating diverse applications. This Layer 1 will also function as the Data Availability layer for the Layer 2 EVM projects and its L3 appchains.
The new ZK-privacy EVM Layer 2 Developer Testnet is now operational and welcomes builders and early adopters. Integration projects include Rarible, known for its NFT marketplace, and another yet-to-be-disclosed team working on innovative prediction markets. The mainnet for developers is anticipated to launch in the third quarter of 2024.
Aleph Zero EVM operates as a ZK-privacy Layer 2 rollup on Ethereum, developed in collaboration with Gelato. It utilizes Arbitrum’s Anytrust DAC technology to create a fast, secure, and scalable environment for blockchain operations. With block times of up to 250ms and the ability to process thousands of transactions per second, it stands as one of the fastest EVM chains available.
Luis Schliesske, Founder of Gelato, remarked, “Aleph Zero EVM harnesses Arbitrum Orbit’s exceptional Web3 scaling stack, along with cutting-edge developer tools, to forge the leading privacy-driven blockchain infrastructure on the market. Expect privacy to take center stage in 2024 and beyond as more real-world applications come to light.”
The Aleph Zero EVM Layer 2 Developer Testnet is equipped with comprehensive development tools from Gelato and third-party infrastructures, such as oracles, block explorers, and multi-signature functionality, making it a robust platform for developers.
Aleph Zero’s zkOS employs the Halo2 framework combined with the KZG commitment scheme to achieve high speed alongside a universally trusted setup. Though it may demand more from developers compared to alternatives like Noir or Risc0, Aleph Zero’s zkToolkit eases the integration of zkOS, ensuring optimal performance and simplicity for existing apps across both the Aleph Zero and Ethereum ecosystems. Initial tests reveal that zkOS can execute zero-knowledge proofs in approximately 600-800 ms on standard devices, utilizing browsers like Safari and Chrome. Today marks the unveiling of the EVM Testnet, with the Mainnet slated for release in Q3 2024. This will empower developers to launch production-ready applications equipped with optional privacy features. The Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for zkOS is expected by Q3 2024, promising ZK identity functionalities in partnership with idOS and private transactions on various ERC-20 tokens by Q4 2024. More advanced zkOS features are projected for Q1 2025. For more information, check out the roadmap section at alephzero.org.
