Adobe Unveils Commercial Launch of Generative AI Features Across Its Applications

In Brief

Adobe has launched the Firefly web portal for AI experimentation and has added Firefly functionality to Photoshop and Illustrator, including new AI capabilities for Express.

Adobe Adobe has officially rolled out Firefly AI, marking its transition from beta to full commercial use on platforms like Creative Cloud, Adobe Express, and Experience Cloud. Initially unveiled in March, Firefly boasts the ability to create images, graphics, video content, and textual effects based on succinct descriptive prompts.

As part of this launch, the company showcased the Firefly web portal for AI experimentation, integrated Firefly features into Photoshop and Illustrator, and enhanced Express with AI tools. This web application is reminiscent of OpenAI’s DALL-E 2, allowing users to generate artwork from text prompts online.

In addition, Adobe Express is set to feature Firefly’s text-to-image technology. Adobe is now providing all Creative Cloud users access to a suite of Firefly-powered tools, including Generative Fill and Generative Expand in Photoshop, Generative Recolor in Illustrator, and other AI-driven features such as text-based video editing and voice improvement in Premiere Pro and After Effects. Previously, only a select group of beta testers had the chance to utilize Firefly.

Ely Greenfield, Adobe's CTO for digital media, said, 'With over 2 billion generations, the input and enthusiasm from creators during the Firefly beta has encouraged us to deliver AI tools that ensure commercial safety and integrate smoothly into the applications our customers cherish.'

Earlier this year, Google incorporated Firefly into its Bard requests, enabling users to refine graphic customizations in Adobe Express. In response to concerns regarding rights, Adobe trained its Firefly AI using images from its stock library and content in the public domain, a significant advancement for generative AI technology.

Nevertheless, several beta testers expressed concerns about Firefly's artistic style, noting that they found it lacking in realism and creativity when compared to other text-to-image platforms like Midjourney.

Adobe is strategically emphasizing Firefly’s versatility as a crucial selling point for enterprise clients. The focus here is on the AI's ability to be tailored through training on specific brand materials and assets, allowing for the creation of personalized graphics and multimedia that align with a company's unique visual identity.

Adobe Introduces New Compensation Model for Contributors

Adobe has rolled out a new compensation framework for contributors to Adobe Stock, who have significantly aided in training Firefly's AI models. Contributors who qualify will receive an annual bonus based on their total contributions to the platform, considering the total number of approved images and assets licensed within a year. This initiative aims to acknowledge and reward creators for their essential role in propelling Adobe’s AI advancements.

In line with the compensation structures present in other AI platforms, the company has also launched Generative Credits, which are tokens that enable users to produce a defined number of images monthly using AI.

To gain access to the standalone Firefly web application, Adobe will provide a subscription plan that offers 100 monthly Generative Credits. Similarly, Creative Cloud and Express Premium plans will include a monthly allowance of Generative Credits. The primary Creative Cloud subscription, which allows access to all Adobe applications, will offer 1,000 credits each month, while Express Premium plans will provide 250 credits monthly.

Additionally, free Adobe accounts will receive 25 credits every month, with the option to purchase more if needed. However, users will still have the ability to create AI-generated images and text without using credits, albeit at a slower rate. It is important to note that most Adobe users won't face restrictions on generative credits until November 1.

In comparison, Canva Pro provides its users with 500 credits monthly but does not allow image creation beyond that allotted number. Interestingly, acquiring 1,035 credits for image generation on Platform 2 costs $135, highlighting the competitive value that Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription brings.
